FAWCO News March 2019

FAWCO header logo

Dear AWG and FAWCO friends,

Spring is in the air and the arrival of March means that the FAWCO Conference is near. I am very excited to be joining more than 150 participants representing 11 FAWCO regions in Edinburgh on 21-24 March to hear about the important work that FAWCO is doing from all the clubs involved, together with FAWCO’s worldwide outreach efforts. I have had a look at the preliminary conference agenda and have started to plan which meetings and workshops I will attend. I will try to go to as many as I can, particularly those that I think will be beneficial for our club.  I hope that there will be plenty of opportunities to network and to exchange ideas and best practices.  If you would like to follow the news from the conference, there are usually highlights posted of each of the day’s proceedings on the  FAWCO Website.

Development Grants
I would also like to remind you to choose the Development Grants for which you would like me to cast our collective vote. You should have received an email with summaries of the projects or you can read more here https://www.awglr.org/vote-for-fawco-development-grantz

Other news:

We are nearing the end of the current Target Program 2016-2019 which was focused on Education:  EMPOWERING WOMEN AND GIRLS THROUGH KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS.  If you want to read more about the Project Hope Beyond Displacement, please follow the link.  https://www.fawco.org/global-issues/target-program/education/target-project

FAWCO’s goal of raising $125,000 was achieved and in fact more than $150,000 has been raised to date! AWG fundraised $1,440 towards the project and we are a Gold Member on the Club Donor wall, see here http://www.fawcofoundation.org/our-programs/updated-2017/club-donor-wall-hope-beyond-displacement.html

The fourth Target Program will be announced soon and will have a focus on health. I will be hosting a fundraiser for this very soon, I’ll keep you posted!

Over the past year the Global Issues Health team have contributed articles related to the top ten issues in women's health, as viewed by the World Health Organization. More than twenty years after countries signed pledges in the Beijing Declaration and Platform of Action, women are still confronted with many health problems. The right to good health and well-being (SDG #3) is intimately tied to the other SDGs. I have volunteered to help and write some articles as part of FAWCO’s Global Issues Health Team.  Here is a link to a recent article I have written on The Impact of STIs on Women’s Health https://www.fawco.org/global-issues/health/health-articles/4051-the-impact-of-sexually-transmitted-infections-stis-on-women-s-health

If you would like to get involved with any of the Global Issues Teams at FAWCO- Education, Health, Environment or Human Rights, visit the  FAWCO Website, or let me know and I will help you.

I think that’s enough for this month; I will report on FAWCO at the UN as well as updating you on the Conference News.
